CHENNAI: Two persons sneaked into the Punjab National Bank branch on Avvai Shanmugham Salai, Gopalapuram and burnt a few documents kept in the branch, Police said. As there was no evidence of the intruders attempting to rob the cash the Police are investigating the reason behind motive of the duo. Some residents on the upper floors of the same building noticed fire and smoke emanating from the bank branch around 1.30 am and alerted the Police. Senior police officials, rushed to the spot and found the front lock of the bank broken open and some files burning. Meanwhile, the branch manager came to the spot, and found the entire cash of Rs 90 lakh kept inside the locker to be safe, Police said. The accused did not make an attempt to tamper the bank locker or did not have any tools like bank gas cutters, said Police after scanning the CCTV cameras of the bank. This has left Police confused and they are investigating whether the prime motive of the culprits was to destroy specific documents kept in the bank than burglary. The intruders could be locals and are checking the images of the duo with those available in their records said Police. “The visuals recorded show the accused tearing some documents and setting them on fire. They do not seem to be expert burglars. Moreover the bank is small with just one room and not designed to keep large amount of cash, Police said. Investigation is on to find out what they destroyed to ascertain their real intention and said the information passed on by the residents helped in preventing a major fire accident, Police said. ]]>
