<![CDATA[A man accused of several violent crimes was shot at by the police at Konanakunte on Saturday night. Around midnight on Saturday, the Konanakunte police surrounded Palani, 30, alias Santosh, and three members of his gang at Jambo Savari Dinne. Palani allegedly attacked a constable, Kiran Kumar, with a broad heavy knife . The police fired two rounds in the air to dissuade Palani, but when he refused to drop the knife, they shot him on the left leg in self-defence, said Mr. S.D. Sharanappa, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South). “The constable has serious injuries, while Palani is recovering in hospital,” he said. Palani, and his associates Dileep, Muthu K. and Ajaz Khan have all been arrested. The manhunt started after the four were accused of barging into the house of their acquaintance Venkatesh at Kothanur on Saturday night. A violent argument broke out, which ended with the four men reportedly assaulting Venkatesh and snatching two gold chains and other jewellery from him and his family members. Based on this complaint, the police tracked Palani and his associates. Palani has a case of murder and two cases of attempt to murder and was deemed a history-sheeter at the Bannerghatta police station. The police said he was recently accused in a kidnapping case. This is the second such incident of the police shooting at the leg of an accused in “self-defence”. Earlier this week, Hassain Pasha, who was accused of killing an elderly couple at Marathahalli, was shot at by the police. In another incident a man was injured when he attempted to flee from the police during a fight at Subramanyanagar. Late on Saturday night, Lokesh and Kishore were engaged in a fight over a trivial matter, said the police. Kishore, who was injured, called the police. However, on seeing the arrival of a Hoysala patrolling vehicle, Lokesh, 25, jumped from the two-storey building in a bid to escape, said the police. He suffered severe injuries and was admitted to the hospital. In yet another incident a daily wage worker was killed allegedly by his associate at Mahalakshmi Layout after a fight over finances. According to the police, around 6.30 a.m. on Sunday, Bhovipalya resident Manikant, 22, was attacked with knives and machetes and was left severely bleeding by the side of the main road at Mahalakshmi Layout. He died a couple of hours later. Santosh and Nagaraj, who are accused of hacking him, fled after the incident, said the police. The three friends were reportedly inebriated and had come to the area for the funeral. A fight broke out over finances and payment, which eventually led to the death of Manikant, the police said.]]>
