KOCHI: Police in Kochi have established with the help of DNA profiling confirming the paternity of a four month old girl that the father of the child was a 12 year old boy in Kerala. The child’s mother is a 17 year old girl and she is a relative of the boy, Police say. In November 2016 the incident came to light after the girl gave birth to a baby at a private hospital in Kakkanad. The girl confessed during the investigation that she was impregnated by her younger relative. But Police however given the age of the minor boy profiled the DNA of the infant girl to confirm the paternity. “Thiruvananthapuram Medical College profiled the DNA and medical experts generated DNA profiles from the blood samples of the father and the baby. Thereby medically establishing the relationship’’. Mr. S. Jayakrishnan, Circle Inspector, Kalamassery said, ‘’The medical report confirmed that the boy was the baby girl’s father”. A case under the POCSO Act was registered against the couple as they are both underage, according to Police. The Circle Inspector added, ‘’As the boy and the girl were minors cases under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) would be registered against both. The Juvenile Justice Board will conduct the trial”. The spokesman of the private hospital has said that it had reported the incident to Police when the girl was admitted and delivered the baby. The spokesman further added, “After learning that the mother was a minor we immediately reported the matter to Childline and Police and handed over all the medical reports to them for the investigation”.
