Tinsukia, Assam: In a significant breakthrough against fuel theft, Digboi Police have dismantled an organized fuel pilferage racket and arrested a repeat offender allegedly involved in siphoning petroleum products from oil tankers operating in the region.
According to police sources, the operation was carried out following specific intelligence inputs regarding the illegal extraction and sale of fuel from tankers transporting petroleum products through the Digboi area. During the raid, law enforcement personnel apprehended a suspect with a history of similar offences and seized a substantial quantity of stolen fuel along with equipment used in the pilferage operation.
Investigators revealed that the accused had previously been involved in fuel theft cases and was under police surveillance. The racket reportedly involved the unauthorized extraction of fuel from tankers during transit, which was subsequently sold in the black market, causing significant financial losses to oil companies and posing serious safety hazards.
Police officials stated that further investigation is underway to identify other members of the network and uncover the full extent of the illegal operation. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional arrests in the coming days. Senior police officers reiterated their commitment to cracking down on organized fuel theft and warned that stringent action would be taken against individuals involved in such unlawful activities.
The successful operation has been welcomed by local residents and industry stakeholders, who have expressed concern over recurring incidents of fuel pilferage in Assam’s oil-producing regions. Officials emphasized that coordinated efforts between law enforcement agencies and oil sector authorities will continue to ensure the security of petroleum transportation networks across the state.
