Mangalagiri: DGP Mr. Gautam Sawang IPS was greeted by orphan children and women from many institutions, along with Childline1098 on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan to celebrate the promise of protection made by Andhra Pradesh Police. As an 8-year-old tied a Rakhi to DGP, he noticed a bruise in the little girl’s eye and enquired about it. The girl, originally hailing from Odisha, was brought to Vijayawada by a woman and was employed as a maid for the past 6 months with constant harassment from the family. On August 12, few people discovered the harassment inflicted on the child and reported it to Childline1098, due to which Andhra Pradesh Police, along with various institutions worked together to free her and join her into a rehabilitation center. National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, National Commission for Women, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, and Government of Andhra Pradesh has taken several initiatives for the safety and security of women and children in the state such as the Disha initiatives which instilled confidence in countless women and Operation Muskaan which rescued 34,037 children in 4 phases in 2020-21.
As per the Hon’ble Chief Minister’s vision for women’s safety and security being the top priority, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has introduced Disha initiatives that instilled confidence, geared gender mainstreaming, and uplifted the spirit of countless women. Operation Muskaan, a boon for the street children has rescued 34,037 street children and those who were orphaned due to COVID-19 in 2020-21.
