Guwahati: As the Ambubachi Mela kicks off on Wednesday, the city's traffic police have made elaborate arrangements for the movement of vehicles. Inter-district buses or heavy vehicles will not be allowed to enter the city from Jalukbari point to avert traffic jams.

Considered to be the biggest religious congregation in eastern India, the fair draws thousands of devotees belonging to the Shakti sect of Hinduism to Kamakhya Temple atop the Neelachal hills. This time, the fair will continue till June 26.  Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Pranab Jyoti Goswami has urged devotees to avail themselves of the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) bus service from the foothills of Kamakhya to the temple.

No inter-district or long-distance buses, including those operated by the ASTC, will be allowed to enter DG Road, MG Road or TR Phukan Road.  Restrictions on movement of vehicular traffic in and around Kamakhya Temple and surrounding areas, particularly on MG Road, DG Road, TR Phukan Road and the road towards the temple from the foothills, are already in place.
