Khammam: The Telangana police have recovered and defused landmines planted with the intention of killing Naxals-police in a forest area near Penugolu village in the Wajid zone of Khammam district.
Mulugu police have received credible information that top leaders of the government-banned Maoist militia had plotted to assassinate the police party with weapons and planted explosives and ammunition in the reserve forest.
While inspecting the area with a bomb disposal squad on Monday, police found suspicious electrical wires that led to the identification of landmines. Police said they immediately took proper precautions and dispersed them.
“There have been a number of incidents in which innocent people and cattle have been killed due to landmine blasts set up by the government-banned Maoist party,” a police official said.
