Udupi, Karnataka: In a significant breakthrough, the Udupi City Police Station successfully arrested a long-absconding accused who was wanted in multiple cheating cases registered in 2011.

The accused, Vigneshwar Aital (56), a native of Kumbhashi in Kundapur taluk of Udupi district, had been evading arrest for nearly 15 years after several cases were registered against him under Section 420 of the IPC. Chargesheets had already been filed in around ten cases before the Hon’ble Court, but the accused failed to appear despite repeated summons and warrants. Consequently, the court had declared him an absconding offender.

Acting on credible information, a police team led by PSI Bharatesh Kankanwadi, along with HC Prasanna, HC Ramesh and PC Anand, under the guidance of Inspector-in-Charge Mahesh Prasad of Udupi City Police Station, traced the accused to Talaghattapura in Bengaluru.

The team took him into custody on March 5, 2026. He was produced before the Hon’ble Court on March 6 with a warrant, following which the court remanded him to judicial custody.

The successful operation highlights the persistent efforts of the police in tracing absconding offenders and ensuring that justice is served.
