Tamil Nadu, Tirunelveli (Aruvadi): Under the visionary leadership of District Superintendent of Police N. Silambarasan, IPS, the Tirunelveli Police have launched a pioneering, cost-free self-defense martial arts program for young women in Aruvadi. Deputy Superintendent of Police Prasannakumar, IPS—working closely with Circle Inspector Sudha—has overseen the “Let’s Learn Self-Defense” and “Let’s Protect Women” initiative since its inauguration on April 1.
More than one hundred schoolgirls from the surrounding communities have enthusiastically enrolled in the program, which emphasizes silambam—a traditional Tamil martial art using bamboo staffs—alongside other defensive techniques. Esteemed instructors Palaniyachi and Roop Swathi lead the daily sessions, teaching participants how to build strength, agility, and confidence.
On Friday, DSP Prasannakumar and his wife, Dr. Aparna Prasannakumar, made a special appearance at the training camp to offer valuable medical and health advice tailored to the students’ needs. They spoke on injury prevention, proper warm-up routines, and the importance of balanced nutrition to support rigorous physical activity.
“This program is about more than physical skills,” DSP Prasannakumar noted. “It’s about instilling a sense of empowerment and safety in our young women.” Superintendent Silambarasan added, “By equipping these girls with practical self-defense tools, we’re fostering a more secure and resilient community.”
The initiative reflects Tirunelveli Police’s ongoing commitment to proactive community engagement and women’s safety. Plans are already underway to expand the program to neighboring districts and introduce additional modules, including women’s legal rights and situational awareness workshops.
As the “Let’s Learn Self-Defense” camp continues through the month, participants—and their families—have expressed deep gratitude for the police department’s innovative approach to public safety. Such collaborative efforts mark a significant step toward a safer, more empowered future for the region’s young women.
