Chennai: Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday announced Rs one crore as financial aid to the family of head constable Munusamy who was killed by a gang of robbers in Krishnagiri last week. Reading out a statement under rule 110 in the Assembly, she said that though she had already announced Rs five lakh as solatium to the family as per the present rules, it was her firm belief that the relief was not enough to the kin of the policeman.
"Hence, having in mind the huge sacrifice of Munusamy, I have ordered to issue Rs one crore to his family," she said, adding that she has instructed the chief secretary to change the existing government order and issue a new one, increasing financial aid being given to police personnel who die or sustain injuries in such valorous acts. Jayalalithaa also said the government would take care of the higher education expenses of Munusamy's daughter Rakshana. Last week, a gang of robbers attacked a Telugu teacher when she was returning from her school, snatched her gold chain and fled away. The teacher went to Uthnapalli police station and narrated her story to the cops. The police officials informed crime branch team about the snatching incident. Acting on the information, a team from crime branch comprising sub inspector Nagraj, head constable Munusamy and constable Dhanpal went in search of the perpetrators. During the search operation, the team were informed about the presence of snatchers in a village. The team went to the village and when they tried to nab them, the perpetrators attacked the police team with knives. All of the three police men were stabbed. Munusamy died on the spot, while the two others are getting treatment. Soon after the incident, Jayalalithaa announced Rs five lakh financial aid to the family of the head constable and said she had ordered the police department to take strict action against the assailants.
