New Delhi, July 2025: In a remarkable medical achievement, Army Hospital (Research & Referral) has successfully conducted a rare Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI) on a 1.8-year-old girl, the daughter of a serving Indian Army soldier. The child was diagnosed with Michel Aplasia, a congenital condition where the auditory nerves are absent—making traditional cochlear implants ineffective.
This groundbreaking procedure was made possible through a joint effort by the expert medical team at Army Hospital R&R and the renowned ENT surgeon, Padma Shri Prof. Mohan Kameswaran, along with his team. The surgery offers a lifeline to patients who would otherwise remain in complete silence, by directly stimulating the brainstem to restore auditory perception.
This successful surgery not only changes the life trajectory of the young patient but also marks a major milestone for Army Hospital R&R, establishing it among the very few centres in India capable of performing such advanced neuro-auditory procedures.
The Indian Armed Forces Medical Services continue to uphold their commitment to world-class healthcare for serving personnel and their families, combining clinical excellence with compassion.
