Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu: Venkatesh serves as a Head Constable in the Tirunelveli District Police. While he was riding his two-wheeler without a helmet, Dr. R. Thirunavukkarasu, IPS, the DIG of the Tirunelveli Range, spotted him. The DIG then sent an officer to instruct the Head Constable to visit his office before proceeding on his way. Subsequently, Head Constable Venkatesh visited the Tirunelveli Range DIG’s office accompanied by his wife. There, the DIG—noting that the officer seemingly did not grasp the importance of wearing a helmet—instructed him to visit the head injury ward at the Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital to observe the condition of patients undergoing treatment there, with the aim of raising his awareness. Following these instructions, Head Constable Venkatesh visited the hospital, where he witnessed the suffering of accident victims battling for their lives and listened to their words. Later, he uploaded a video to social media explaining the experience; he highlighted how many families are left destitute when individuals lose their lives in accidents due to not wearing helmets, emphasized the necessity of wearing helmets while riding, and noted how a moment of negligence can alter one’s entire life. In the video, he also expressed his gratitude to the DIG for choosing to offer unique counsel and helping him realize the importance of wearing a helmet, rather than simply imposing a punishment.
