Ahmedabad: Gujarat MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Mewani has been arrested by Assam police. He was arrested by Assam police at 11.30 pm on Wednesday at Palanpur Circuit House in Banaskantha district. The MLA was arrested in a controversy that erupted over a tweet. Jignesh is currently representing Vedgam constituency from the Congress.
His supporters confirmed Jignesh’s arrest. However, his aides allege that the police arrested the MLA without a copy of the FIR. Assam police have registered cases against MLA Jignesh Mewani under non-bailable sections. The cases were registered a few days ago for making tweets such as denigrating a community, conspiring to create conflict between the two communities and disrupting the peaceful atmosphere.
Jignesh Mewani was taken by road to Ahmedabad. From there, the Assam police will take him to Guwahati by train. However, party leaders and his supporters have been staging protests in Ahmedabad, the capital of Gujarat, against the arrest of the Congress MLA. Meanwhile, the arrest of Jignesh Mewani has taken precedence in the run-up to the Gujarat Assembly elections later this year.
