New Delhi: It was on this day November 26, 2008, the horrific terror attack in Mumbai occurred and it is now eleven years since the attack has been done by the terrorists who had come from Karachi, Pakistan and attacked the commercial capital of India, Mumbai. The country has been severely in an emotional state of mind.
The internet is also in a severely emotional state of mind. Many security personnel gave their lives fighting against the terrorists during the attack on behalf of the country. For these martyrs, tributes poured in from several quarters including celebrities and significant personalities on social media. During the attack around 166 persons died and over 300 were injured. Several officials including Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, Sub-Inspector Tukaram Omble, Mumbai Anti Terrorist Squad Chief Hemant Karkare, Havaldar Gajendra Singh, and Inspector Vijay Salaskar, were killed.
The Dignitaries such as Babul Supriyo, singer-politician and Shikhar Dhawan, cricketer paid tribute to martyrs and the victims. Mr. Emmanuel Lenain, Ambassador of France to India also paid tribute to the martyrs. Sand Artist, Sudarsan Pattnaik also saluted the martyrdom of the heroes of 26/11 with his art piece. Twitter also remembered the martyrs in stirring posts and wrote messages in honor of them on social media. The posts read, “Let’s take a moment and remember the heroes of 26/11 Mumbai attack who bravely fought the terrorists and sacrifice their life for us,” a user said.
The brutal attack witnessed in Mumbai in 2008 lasted for four days starting from November 26. During this period 10 terrorists from Pakistan had attacked India’s commercial capital at five major locations simultaneously – Oberoi-Trident Hotel and Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel, a Jewish cultural center – Chabad House at Nariman Point, Leopold Cafe, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station and Cama Hospital. The terrorists stepped into Mumbai from Karachi, Pakistan, by a fishing trawler. Nine of the terrorists were killed during the attack while Mohammed Ajmal Kasab was arrested and subsequently executed in November 2012.
