Virudhunagar: The officers of the Anti-Food Smuggling Unit received information that rice packets were being smuggled from ration shops in Thirutangal area near Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district. Acting on the information, under the leadership of South Zone Food Safety Police Superintendent Mr. Karthikarajan, officials engaged in intensive surveillance on Sivakasi – Thirutangal road. Then the officers saw a gang smuggling bags of rice in a mini cargo van from 2 ration shops in Thirutangal, Pandian Nagar area. The driver of the mini cargo van and two loadmen fled the spot after seeing the officers watching. Officials searched the mini cargo van.1500 kg of ration rice in 29 bags weighing 50 kg each were found in the van. Rajeswaran (26), son of Mariyappan from Alamarathupatti area, was involved in the smuggling of ration rice bags. The authorities arrested him. The officials also seized the smuggled ration rice bags and the mini cargo van used for smuggling. Police are looking for the minivan driver and 2 load men involved in ration rice smuggling.
