Chennai: 22,000 Police personnel are guarding Chennai today for security on the eve of Republic Day, a top Police official said. In addition to this, 1,500 Tamil Nadu Special Police (TSP) have also been deployed. To avert any untoward incident 16 companies of paramilitary forces will be posted in strategic locations, the official added. Officers from other states will also be part of the Republic Day celebrations to oversee the security arrangements. A Police source said, “14 Inspector General’s of Police (IG), four Additional Director Generals of Police and 17 Superintendents of Police”. The Chennai City Police, Chennai Traffic Police, Coast Guard and Coastal Police will also intensify their patrolling in coastal area,” an official said. Shopping malls, places of worship and other public places including railway stations and bus depots will come under thick security blanket. Additional Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Mr.Abhay Kumar Singh said Police have already erected watchtowers and roads barricaded. Raids and searches across the city will be carried out too, he said. Vehicle checks also will be conducted.
