Tiruvarur: In Tiruvarur, a specialized team comprising police and health officials has been established to eradicate Panmasala and Gutka tobacco products across the district. This team will conduct continuous inspections of box stores and grocery shops located near schools and colleges. They are authorized to take legal action against those found illegally selling these prohibited products. Acting on the orders of the District Superintendent of Police, the special team is conducting a comprehensive investigation throughout the district.
During an inspection by the Thiruthaurapoondi Police Station’s special team in specific areas, including Kalimuthu and Raghu’s box stores near Bharathidasan College, Rameshkumar’s box store near St. Teresa’s High School, and Babu Prasad’s box store near 3.Budiya bus stand, it was discovered that banned Panmasala, Coolip, and Gutka tobacco products were being sold. Legal action was promptly taken, resulting in the arrest of shop owners and the closure and sealing of 30 shops in Tiruvarur district. This enforcement aims to eliminate the sale of government-banned tobacco products in violation of regulations.
The Superintendent of Police, Mr. S. Jayakumar, M.Sc(Agri)., has issued a stern warning that these actions will persist until the complete elimination of Panmasala and Gutka in all areas of Tiruvarur district. Shopkeepers will be personally instructed to adhere to laws and regulations, ensuring they do not engage in the illegal sale of these hazardous tobacco products that pose a threat to human life.
