Kerala: Law Enforcement Authorities have issued a public warning about the rise in cyber frauds related to gas cylinder booking and bill updates, where fraudsters are targeting customers by exploiting situations like cylinder shortages.
In such scams, victims receive fake SMS messages, followed by contact through WhatsApp. Fraudsters then send an APK file under the pretext of updating booking details or clearing dues. Once installed, the malicious file can gain complete control over the mobile phone, leading to the theft of bank details, UPI PINs, and financial loss.
Police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and follow these important safety measures:
* Avoid unknown links: Never download or install APK files received via SMS or WhatsApp.
* Use official platforms only: Always use the official websites or apps of gas agencies for bookings and payments.
* Verify before acting: Do not panic upon receiving urgent messages—contact the agency directly to confirm authenticity.
* Protect personal data: Never share bank details, OTPs, or passwords on unknown platforms.
* Report immediately: In case of fraud, report it promptly via the helpline 1930 or through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
Officials emphasized that timely awareness and quick reporting can help prevent financial loss and assist in recovering funds, urging the public to stay cautious and informed.
