South 24 Parganas: A case of theft was reported between 9.20 pm on October 23 and 9.00 am on October 24, when unknown persons broke into an electronics showroom on Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road and stole 90 smartphones and keypad phones, phone accessories, and one laptop. The total value of the stolen items was estimated at around Rs.10 lakh. A case was registered at Shyampukur Police Station, and the Anti-Burglary Section of the Detective Department later took up the investigation.
There being no CCTV cameras in the vicinity of the shop, sources were engaged to find out if brand new mobile phones were being sold cheap. Soon, information was received that one Mohammad Mustafa was trying to sell new mobile phones to a shop in Mullickpur, Baruipur.
Acting upon the source information, a team from the Anti- Burglary Section conducted a raid in the Jinjira Bazar outpost area in South 24 Parganas on October 29, and arrested Mustafa (24). Based on a statement he gave during interrogation, three others Sonu Khan, Md. Iqbal and Md. Subhan of Ekbalpore, Kolkata were also arrested. A laptop, 75 new mobile phones, and some mobile accessories were recovered from their possession, and they were taken into police custody.
Interrogation, revealed that the gang may also be involved in other cases of burglary in similar showrooms, based on CCTV footage.
