DEHRADUN: At the time when hilly areas of Uttarakhand are witnessing severe migration of youths to the plains in search of jobs, the state police department — doing their bit — have come up with a unique idea to check it to the extent possible — the department has decided to offer home postings to more than 4,000 head constables and constables hailing from six hill districts of Champawat, Bageshwar, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Pithorgarh and Uttarkashi. Talking about the decision that was taken at the police headquarters here on Saturday, director general of police (DGP) M A Ganapathy told, "The decision will help constables and head constables stay closer to their roots. The move will help prevent migration from these districts to some extent." The DGP, however, ruled out the possibility of home postings for sub inspectors and inspectors. "They are few in number, which will hardly make any difference. So, we have limited ourselves to constables and head constables," added Ganapathy. Hailing the initiative, a constable on condition of anonymity said it would definitely help check widespread migration from the hills. "If a constable or head constable is posted in a district like Udham Singh Nagar or Dehradun, his entire family — wife, children and parents — come along with him to the district. But, home postings will keep them and their families confined to their home districts," he added. At present, the Uttarakhand police have as many as 25,000 constables and head constables, of which more than 4,000 are from the six districts. While constables hailing from the plain districts are happy to be posted in Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Haridwar, Tehri, Pauri and Almora districts, they are hesitant to go to the remaining six districts — three each in Kumaon and Garhwal regions.
