Trivandrum: Kerala Police has flagged off the new Alco Scan Bus initiative to prevent road accidents by driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Testing will also be done using imported modern equipment. Drunkenness is detected by taking the driver inside the bus and testing his saliva. Results will be available within half an hour. This system is the first in the country. The bus was flagged off by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The bus was handed over under the “Rope” project, a cooperative partnership between the Rotary Club and the police. The bus also has a screening system to scientifically detect drugged drivers, just as there is a system to detect drunken driving.
