Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka: In a major crackdown on illegal forest activities, the Mudigere Forest Department successfully intercepted a lorry transporting illegally harvested timber and registered a forest offence against six accused, demonstrating its commitment to protecting the region’s valuable forest resources.
During a routine patrol and vehicle inspection in the early hours of July 12, forest officials stopped a lorry travelling on the road connecting Handuguli and Halur villages in the Kasaba Hobli of Mudigere Forest Range. Upon inspection, the vehicle, which was concealed under a tarpaulin, was found to be carrying approximately 16 cubic metres of illegally transported wild timber billets valued at around ₹1.70 lakh, without the mandatory transport permit.
The forest team immediately seized the timber and the lorry used for transporting the contraband. A forest case (No. 18/2026-27) was registered against six accused under the relevant provisions of the Forest Act, and further investigation has been initiated.
The successful operation was carried out under the guidance of Deputy Conservator of Forests K. T. Boraiah and Assistant Conservator of Forests Akash T. M., with the operation led by Range Forest Officer Manjunath G. Their timely intervention prevented the illegal movement of valuable forest produce and dealt a significant blow to those involved in unlawful exploitation of natural resources.
This action reflects the Forest Department’s vigilance and unwavering commitment to conserving forests, preventing illegal timber smuggling, and safeguarding the environment. Through regular patrolling, intelligence-based operations, and strict enforcement of forest laws, the department continues to protect biodiversity and ensure that offenders involved in environmental crimes are brought to justice.
