NCRB Says Bengaluru Third Most Unsafe City in India

BENGALURU: According the latest data by National Crime Records Bureau, Bengaluru is the third most unsafe metro city in the country after New Delhi and Mumbai. Statistics show that as many as 35,576 crimes were reported in Bengaluru during 2015 after New Delhi (1.73 lakh cases) and Mumbai (42,940). Bengaluru is followed by Kolkata (23,990) and Hyderabad (16,965). Chennai is the safest metro city in the country with 13,422 cases, according to the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on yesterday. Bengaluru reported 188 murder cases in 2015, the third highest after Delhi (464) and Patna (232), among the 53 cities in the country. The NCRB data also revealed that the city recorded 112 rape cases last year. The city stood third with 777 cases of kidnapping and abduction cases while New Delhi recorded 6,630 cases and Mumbai 1,583 cases. The main reason for the rise in crime cases reported in the city is due to better reporting system compared to other cities, police officials say. Activists, however, say that a lot more needs to be done to make the city safer. IT Capital is Cyber-Crime Hub India’s IT capital also recorded the majority of cyber-crime cases in the country. NCRB data shows that Bengaluru topped the list of metro cities in terms of cyber-crime cases filed – 1,041 cases. Followed by Hyderabad with just 354 cases, Kolkata (111 cases), Delhi (90), Mumbai (26) and Chennai (29). Police officials say that the city recorded most number of cases because more people came forward with complaints.  City tops dowry-related cases Dowry-related cases and deaths continue to be a cause for worry with Bengaluru registering the maximum cases under Dowry Prohibition Act — 714 cases. The city is followed by Jamshedpur (157) and Patna (151). Among metros, Delhi recorded 17 cases and Chennai 3. The data showed that there were 54 dowry deaths reported in the city in 2015. This is the second highest among metro cities, after Delhi (100). Road rage a worry As many as 784 people lost their lives in rash or negligent driving in the city in 2015. Among metros, Delhi recorded the maximum deaths with 1,339, followed by Chennai (897).  ]]>
