Mohali: On Friday, police arrested two taxi drivers, Amit Kumar and Harmanpreet Singh, for being in possession of counterfeit currency worth Rs.12, 000 in the Phase 8-B Industrial Area of Mohali. Amit and Harmanpreet, who are residents of Baltana, Mohali and Patiala respectively, were nabbed at a police checkpoint near the Quark City light point on Airport Road following a tip-off. During the search, the police found ten fake currency notes of Rs.500 denomination in Amit’s possession and 24 such notes on Harmanpreet’s person.
According to Baljinder Singh Bains, the in-charge of the Phase-1 police station, the accused had visited Bhiwani in Haryana on the night of March 23-24 and paid Rs.10,000 for the fake currency notes with a face value of Rs.20,000. They had already spent ten fake notes of Rs.500 in a market in Ambala and were planning to use the remaining notes in the tricity.
After their arrest, the accused were produced before a court and sent to police remand until March 27. They have been charged under sections 489-A, B and C of the Indian Penal Code, which deal with counterfeiting currency notes.
