Why Police Memorial Day is celebrated – It was October 21, 1959, when three officers of the patrolling party of CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) were taken into custody by Chinese soldiers on the Indo-Tibetan border near the hot spring of Ladakh.
The next day, when CRPF teams went in search of them, the Chinese soldiers who were already ambushed opened fire on them. CRPF jawans also gave a befitting reply to that attack, but in that sudden attack, 10 CRPF jawans were martyred and seven other jawans were injured. From that day onwards, every year the whole of India remembers the martyrdom of those 10 brave CRPF jawans. October 21 is celebrated as Police Memorial Day to pay tribute to the martyred police personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
