Dibrugarh, Assam: Marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Dibrugarh Police on Friday destroyed a large quantity of narcotic drugs seized in various cases during a scientific disposal exercise conducted at the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) Biomedical Waste Treatment Facility.
The destruction of the seized contraband was carried out in the presence of IGP (L&O) Akhilesh Singh and Dibrugarh SSP Gaurav Abhijit Dilip, along with other senior police officials.
Addressing the media, IGP Akhilesh Singh said the narcotics were destroyed after obtaining the necessary permission from the competent court and in strict compliance with the provisions of the law. He stated that the previous disposal of seized narcotic substances in Dibrugarh was carried out in September 2025.
Since then, Dibrugarh Police have registered 67 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act), leading to the arrest of 112 accused persons, all of whom have been forwarded to judicial custody.
During Friday’s disposal drive, police destroyed 271 grams of heroin and 77 kilograms of ganja, with the total estimated international market value of the seized contraband pegged at approximately Rs 1.4 crore.
Officials said the destruction was carried out following prescribed legal and scientific procedures at the authorised biomedical waste treatment facility, ensuring environmentally safe disposal of the narcotic substances.
The initiative underscores the commitment of the Assam Police to intensify its crackdown on drug trafficking while ensuring the transparent and lawful disposal of seized narcotics as part of the state’s ongoing anti-drug campaign.
