Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu: In a proactive move to safeguard citizens, V. Prasanna Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Tirunelveli, has issued a public advisory on rising financial frauds carried out through WhatsApp.
Fraudsters are circulating messages containing malicious APK files disguised as “RTO Challan App” links, falsely claiming urgent fine payments to avoid suspension of vehicle documents. Once clicked, these links can hack users’ accounts and lead to unauthorized financial transactions, while also spreading automatically to contacts.
Police have strongly cautioned the public not to download APK files from unknown or suspicious sources, even if received from known contacts. It has been clearly stated that the Police Department never collects fines or penalties through WhatsApp or unofficial applications.
Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report such cyber fraud attempts immediately through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or by calling the helpline number 1930, reaffirming the department’s commitment to public safety and cyber awareness.
