Visakhapatnam: Hydrography is the science of measuring and describing the physical features of oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, and coastal areas. It focuses on collecting information about water depths, underwater terrain, tides, currents, and other characteristics that affect navigation and marine activities.
As part of the observance of World Hydrography Day 2026, the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) organized a series of educational and awareness activities at Visakhapatnam on 23–24 June 2026, highlighting the importance of hydrography in maritime safety and national development.
The celebrations provided students with a unique opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of hydrographic operations and their role in supporting safe navigation at sea. Students from Navy Children School and Dadi Institute of Engineering and Technology visited INS Sandhayak, the Hydrographic Survey Unit (Vizag), and the Naval Chart Depot (Vizag).
During the visit, naval personnel briefed the students on the significance of hydrographic surveys and demonstrated advanced hydrographic survey equipment used to map and study oceans, coastal waters, and navigation channels. The students also gained insights into how accurate hydrographic data contributes to maritime safety, environmental protection, and efficient marine transportation.
The programme emphasized the crucial role of hydrography in ensuring safe navigation, strengthening maritime cooperation, supporting the growth of the Blue Economy, and contributing to the country’s economic and strategic development.
The initiative successfully inspired young minds to learn about marine sciences and naval operations while showcasing the vital contributions of hydrography to national progress, maritime security, and sustainable ocean resource management.
